September 12, 2008 Progress Report
GT Builders
Finished several pickup items in The Swan, including light blocks for vaulted ceilings, patching of a timber over the kitchen, and plywood sheathing in areas getting stone.
Adjusted size of opening for Big Horn office porch door to accommodate new door on order from Montana Sash & Door.

Big Horn’s new entry door – widened to a
double-door and getting a new arch – is a
great addition to the stand-alone nature of
this tower-like entry.
Enlarged entry door of Big Horn to double size with an arched top.
Fixed entry door of Ruby to flow with curved wall and added arched top.
Installed siding on BBQ/privacy wall on Missouri deck.
Installed siding outside Missouri office.
Put up 2×6′s for masons on south end of Gallatin barrel vault to support stone arch during construction.
Miscellaneous framing around parking garage doors and steel beams to allow for ArcusStone
Putting blocking in place for Arctic Heat crews to mount HRV exhausts
Installing 2×4 sleepers in floor of Missouri on the main level to allow for gypcrete and nailing of wood floors.
Flathead Masonry & Tile
Completed west wall of stone on elevator/stair tower above roofline.
Continuing up Missouri’s northeast column/chimney/fireplace with stone and brick.
Big Horn’s new entry door – widened to a double-door and getting a new arch – is a great addition to the stand-alone nature of this tower-like entry.
Installing stone on Swan around garage door and along entry wall and columns.
Building CMU wall on end of boiler vault to hide gas meter
Beginning to build up CMU along concrete wall on the east side of the five-plex (outside wall of the parking garage and storage areas), then starting with stone above grade.
Finished cleaning all materials, scaffolding and tools off roof to allow Rainmaster crew to get roof dried in on five-plex.
With the largest crew on site, they’ve restructured their workers (which means they’ve developed a structure) to allow for much better organization. Now there is an almost military-style chain of command, with impressive efficiency, cleanliness and planning of their daily operations.
Rainmaster
Finished all flashing on Swan to complete this roof.
Installed more flashing on the five-plex to prepare for cedar shake installation, including staging of cedar bundles on the rooftop.

This is truly one of those ‘picture-doesn’t-do-it-justice’ moments, but we have a great start on our cedar thatched roof. The texture and character are perfect for this five-plex, and if we thought this place was a gem before, it’s taken off with this new addition!
Made a sample board of cedar shake to resemble thatched roof, which we approved.
Began installing cedar shake on roof of five plex in rolling, irregular, thatched-roof style.
Fontecilla Custom Interiors
Scratch coat for ArcusStone on Gallatin and Madison porches.
Backer board and scratch coat on parapet wall and BBQ soffit for the Swan.
Began cutting boards for joints of ArcusStone blocks on Big Horn entry tower.
This is truly one of those ‘picture-doesn’t-do-it-justice’ moments, but we have a great start on our cedar thatched roof. The texture and character are perfect for this five-plex, and if we thought this place was a gem before, it’s taken off with this new addition!
MASSIVE amount of samples to facilitate selection of color for exterior ArcusStone on five-plex.
High Ridge Steel
On site to lay out columns for railing above masons working on east concrete wall of parking garage.
Working in shop to continue preparing finish railing
The Metal Connection
Working in shop and coordinating with the electrician to continue working on the Yellowstone dining fixture

This northeast column/chimney of Missouri
has turned out even better than we had
hoped.
93 Wood Products
Milling up material for trim around all wood-clad windows.
Received material and began cutting timbers for Swan dining fixture and kitchen island fixture.
Provided multiple samples for wood flooring to facilitate selection process for inside each unit.
Gran Central Vac
Finished rough-in of Madison
Arctic Heat
Finished rough-in of Madison
Began rough-in of Gallatin
Completed all roof penetrations on remainder of five-plex so we could get roof completely dried in.
Touris Plumbing
Gas lines to Madison
Completed all roof penetrations, same as Arctic Heat above.
Finished penetrations of boiler vents in concrete vaults; now we’re able to finish burying them to make them look like root cellars.
JK Electric
Finished rough-in of Madison
Got both Missouri and Madison inspected prior to insulation
Smith Painting
Working on stain of batten strips and trim pieces around window casing.
Worked to develop a sample of slight whitewash to add an aged look to Ruby siding, somewhat similar to what we did with the upper Gallatin siding.
CM Quality Insulation
Sprayed 2" of urethane foam in the exterior walls of Missouri.
Began preparing to spray urethane foam in the attic space of Ruby (the other reason for getting our penetrations done early – now he’s able to spray without everybody’s stuff filling up the attic space, and the process is much quicker, more efficient and therefore saves money).
Zavala Excavating
Delivered material to job site for backfill around grade beams of The Swan.
Swan River Doors
On site for two different meetings to discuss planning for entry doors of five-plex.
J&J Carpentry
Also present at above-mentioned meetings.
On site to install temporary jamb in entry door of Gallatin so masonry crew is able to continue installing stone around that wall.
Steve Redding
Coordinating with Ron to develop a plan for the water feature outside The Swan.
Ron Incoronato & Co
Came up with a plan for disguising HUGE gas meter on east wall of parking garage, since it’s visible when people first drive up – will surround with stone and build a door to hide it. Met with Nick of Flathead Masonry to revise plan.
Worked with Mike Touris to discuss scheduling of gypcrete in Missouri, Madison and Gallatin’s rooftop patio, as well as logistics of working with other subcontractors.
Came up with layout of ArcusStone for Fontecilla’s crew on west wall of Big Horn porch, in random “pattern”.
Scheduled Zavala excavating to backfill around grade beam of Swan on northeast end for masons to have level working surface.
Worked closely with Flathead Masonry crew to refine stone application for more Old World look

One of the ideas of Bear Dance is to ensure that there is no bad angle from which to view every area of the project, and this view of Gallatin’s rooftop and stair tower from beside the Flathead Cabin is an example of one such pleasant surprise.
Walked through Gallatin with Arctic Heat crew to determine locations for air conditioning vents and HRV boots. Met with Steve Redding to come up with a plan for water feature for The Swan. Even though we’re not close to installation, the masonry crew will be applying stone there soon, and there needs to be a plan in place so we don’t paint ourselves into a corner.
Picked up material from 93 Wood Products for trim around windows of Ruby, Missouri and Boulder (everywhere we have wood trim)
Worked closely with crew from Rainmaster to help come up with the correct technique and application for cedar shakes on five-plex to resemble a thatched roof.
Coordinated in several areas between framing crew, Fontecilla crew and Flathead Masonry in areas where each of their trades overlap to ensure no one is painted into a corner and unable to do their part.
Worked with John Morris of High Ridge Steel to iron out details for iron railing around upper driveways and how it ties into stone.
Worked with crew of Touris Plumbing to plan for rough-in of kitchen on Gallatin’s rooftop patio, a very challenging place for drain lines, water lines, etc.
Camel Committee meeting focused on interior doors and trim styles of the five-plex. Got Missouri decided; got a good start on Madison, and decided to schedule three meetings for next week, since there’s still so much left to decide.
One of the ideas of Bear Dance is to ensure that there is no bad angle from which to view every area of the project, and this view of Gallatin’s rooftop and stair tower from beside the Flathead Cabin is an example of one such pleasant surprise.
Received samples from Carol Nelson of material for rooftop patio and north balcony/deck. Approved and ready to order.
Coordinated with Anderson’s Masonry and Keith Beck to get approval for electric fireplaces we’ll be using in various master bedrooms and one foyer.
Selections/Decisions Needed/Long-Term Issues
Old: Now that entry doors have been decided, need to move to the interior doors of each five-plex unit.
Old: Need to pick out color, surface and style of stucco/ArcusStone on underside of barrel vault over driveway.
Old: Need to continue to work with Keith Beck to come up with hand sketches of certain areas in the five-plex that are critical to coming up with the correct design and theme. Remaining items are the Swan kitchen island fixture and the Gallatin entry (until we think of more, haha).
Old: Received tile selections from Carol Nelson on the Boulder Unit, and Yellowstone is now completed as well. Now it’s time to work on this process on the five-plex.
Old: Need to finalize the style, species and size of the wood flooring for Boulder upstairs, as well as getting bids from several wood floor installers to ensure we get the best product at the best price.
