July 18, 2008 Progress Report

What’s this?? A weekly report on time??? Well, that’s because this one is actually more like a report, and less like a novel. It might not be as entertaining to read, but given our line of work, entertainment isn’t exactly what we needed to be shooting for anyway. This one should be mostly informative, and the monthly updates will still remain the same. Not to worry – the pictures will still be included! And we hereby retain the right to change this format at least another thirty times before the completion of Bear Dance Village. We need to elaborate on one point, though, carrying over a bit from the last report. Today’s date, exactly one year ago, this is what Bear Dance Village looked like:

Bear Dance Village on July 18, 2007. Pouring the concrete slab for The Swan (background), grade beam forms in place on just the east side of the five-plex.

And now, here are a couple pictures from today, exactly one year later:

Looking at the five-plex from a similar location to last year’s photo. You can’t even see the lower buildings or Bigfork Bay now.

Pickup framing in The Swan

Began installing wood siding on east wall of five-plex

Installed melamine for plumbers in mechanical room of Madison

Using the forklift and manlift to install the 41-foot 8×20 fir beam on the south face of Gallatin (notice the red siding on Madison’s curved wall and the new chimney above)

Flathead Masonry & Tile

Brick on new south chimneys on the five-plex.

Prep-work on columns and arches of roof over Gallatin rooftop patio.

Big time cleanup on roof.

Poured four more concrete caps on chimneys.

Gran Central Vac

Finished up the rough-in of Missouri

Arctic Heat

Finished up rough-in of Missouri, minus a few line sets for air conditioning for next week.

Began hanging units in Madison and running trunk lines for A/C and HRV’s.

Touris Plumbing

Staging boilers and vent pipe for radiant snowmelt in upper boiler rooms and in root cellar boiler vaults.

Rough-in of plumbing in Madison

Setting up gas lines and manifolds for boiler inside Madison mechanical room

Hooking up gas line to new fireplace in Swan master bathroom above tub. Also ran water lines around fireplace unit (couldn’t run them permanently until unit was in).

United Drywall

Finished hanging drywall in The Swan and Flathead

Ganz Soda Blasting

Worked on Thursday to blast the beams and siding of the garbage shed up on the southeast corner of the property.

Sprayed back side of the 41-foot beam, as well as a few others we missed the first time.

Smith Painting

The finished fascia and soffit of Gallatin, stained with Bear Dance Brown

Bear Dance Brown on Gallatin’s north timbers, fascia and soffit. Same on Missouri and Madison. Applied water sealant to the above areas.

Sprayed a second coat of Bear Dance Brown on Boulder’s soffit due to lighter tone from the first spray.

Ron Incoronato & Co

Worked with framers to get 8×20x41’ beam installed on Gallatin south.

Watered upper driveway to keep dust down.

Coordinated with Ganz Soda Blasting to get garbage shed treated, as well as a few miscellaneous beams for other areas.

Cleaned out west storage/boiler area to come up with space for camera to check plumbing so we can determine location of bathroom for exercise room.

New cleanup guy on site – helping a ton with keeping the site looking good.

Walk-through of Madison with Arctic Heat to determine vent termination points.

Walk-through of Missouri with Home Technologies to discuss wiring of sound and security.

Coordinated between Rocky (The Metal Connection) and Jeff (JK Electric) for light fixture in The Swan dining room. Looked for options and solutions to get an extra wire in place for separate switching.

Prioritized the schedule for GT Builders to determine which task they would work on next.

Walk-around of five-plex with Jeremy Boyes (Flathead Masonry & Tile) to discuss technical questions and material list for stone on five-plex.

Walk-through of Boulder and Yellowstone with Hank Fontecilla prior to their inside work.

Made selections on stucco texture for outside of Boulder and Swan.

Worked with Fontecilla and 93 Wood Products to get some options and pricing on ceiling of Ruby dining and kitchen.

Met with representatives from Whistler Flooring to discuss wood floor samples, pricing, and finishing options. Came up with a square footage for them to start working up a bid on supplying material.

Talked with Fontecilla and Flathead Masonry & Tile to compare costs of drive-under being stucco or brick. Stand by for decision.

Fabricated sample pieces of cedar trim to give a template for trimming out windows with rough-sawn fir, as a solution to give more detail and allow batten strips (to be applied) to have correct reveal.

Meeting with Camel Committee

Discussed ways of sprucing up Madison entry Talked about exterior finishes around five-plex: Stone on Ruby tower to match Yellowstone rock (Jeremy Boyes will get competing bids from Montana Rockworks and Glacier Stone Supply); brick on north end of Big Horn; Big Horn dormer to be green to match south garage wall; Missouri east wall, wood siding, to be red like Madison master bedroom siding; garbage shed to be green like Big Horn, roof to be slate using leftovers from The Swan and Flathead

Addressed a few design details on Big Horn entry (exterior)

Met with Mike Touris and Pete Dunkel to discuss options for snowmelt sensor on Swan upper patio, layout and plan for cutting concrete for Swan floor plug, and plan for getting gas turned on by Northwestern Energy.

Discussed options for more efficient rough-in process for Arctic Heat, Touris Plumbing, JK Electric and Gran Central Vac. Need to come up with areas to drop ceilings for mechanical chases in the basement to speed things up and give more options, because of the limitations on drilling through floor joists.

Selections/Decisions Needed/Long-Term Issues

New: Need Carol Nelson to pick out slate or tile for rooftop patio of The Swan and Gallatin so we can get these installed before the weather gets too cold.

New: Need to make sure we have all the colors picked out for stucco so Hank can be working on stucco exteriors while the weather is nice.

New: Need to get a material takeoff for batten strips to install on wood siding.

Old: Need to continue to work with Keith Beck to come up with hand sketches of certain areas in the five-plex that are critical to coming up with the correct design and theme. Examples are the Missouri TV-and- fireplace combo, the Swan dining chandelier, the Gallatin foyer, and the Madison master bedroom fireplace (a corner design with a lot of flexibility to be creative).

Old: Received tile selections from Carol Nelson on the Boulder Unit, and Yellowstone is nearly finished, but we need a final list and details, as well as the beginnings of this process on the five-plex.

Old: Need to begin looking at samples of wrought iron inserts and designs for the railing of all the decks on the five-plex. Since there are so many of them, these railings will be an absolutely critical design element, and we fully intend to make the most of that opportunity.

Old: Need to finalize the style, species and size of the wood flooring for Boulder upstairs, as well as getting bids from several wood floor installers to ensure we get the best product at the best price.

Old: Colors and finishes for units in the five-plex have been discussed, and we have a good start and direction now. Our meetings in the coming weeks will focus on ironing out all those details. Also will go through the five-plex and, using these decisions, pick out trim styles and sizes, flooring styles, and any final design details.
